In a solemn remembrance of the fallen heroes of the Nigeria-Biafra Civil War, parts of the South East region adhered to a sit-at-home order issued by the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB).

On Thursday, May 30, 2024, the bustling cities of Onitsha and Nnewi became still as residents stayed indoors to honor the day.

The usually vibrant markets of Onitsha, a major commercial hub, and Nnewi, known for its industrial prowess in Anambra State, were closed.

The shutdown extended to schools, banks, hospitals, government offices, and transportation companies in both towns.

Streets that typically teem with activity were noticeably empty. Thoroughfares such as the Onitsha Enugu expressway, Onitsha Asaba expressway, and the Onitsha Odoekpe – Atani road, among others, were devoid of the usual traffic and pedestrian movement.

Security measures were in place, with entry and exit gates locked, ensuring compliance with the order.

A report from Vanguardngr highlighted the absence of security personnel at their regular checkpoints, which are often bustling with activity.

The lack of patrolling by the Police, Army, Navy, NSCDC, and FRSC officials was also noted.

Residents expressed their dismay at the security agents who, despite assurances to the public to continue their lawful activities, were conspicuously absent during the observance of the sit-at-home order.
