Social media has been abuzz following a perceived misunderstanding between two appointees of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

Bayo Onanuga, the President's Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, and Ajuri Ngelale, Special Adviser on Media and Publicity to the president issued conflicting statements regarding his schedule ahead of his first year in office on Wednesday, May 29 (today).

Onanuga stated that the National Assembly would convene a joint session to commemorate the 25th anniversary of uninterrupted democracy and legislative proceedings in Nigeria ahead of Tinubu's first year in office.

He said on Tuesday that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu would not be delivering a nationwide address on Wednesday, May 29 to mark his first anniversary as the leader of Nigeria.

However, Ngelale later issued a statement describing Onanuga's statement as "false and unauthorized."

“In view of public commentary concerning the President delivering a speech before a Joint Sitting of the National Assembly tomorrow, May 29, 2024, it is important to state that this information is false and unauthorized as the Office of the President was not involved in the planning of the event,” excerpts of his statement reads.

The conflicting reports have sparked various reactions on social media since they surfaced.

Wednesday, May 29 marks one year since Bola Ahmed Tinubu took the oath of office as the president of the largest black nation on earth, Nigeria.

Tinubu was sworn in as the fifth democratically elected president, since the return of democracy in 1999, following his victory in the keenly-contested 2023 presidential election.

Tinubu, 72, who contested on the platform of the ruling All Progressives Congress, APC, emerged victorious against his closest rivals, Atiku Abubakar of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, and Peter Obi of the Labour Party, LP.

palmwine_tappa commented: "That is the outward manifestation of the inward cornfusion in the presidency. I was surprised when I saw that Tinubu will address the national assembly. With this amount of failure, opposition members in the house will definitely embarrass him with facts about his one year. I'm not surprised it has been cancelled. But truth is, they did plan for it and Bayo was right but they changed plans after weighing the consequences."
