Supporters have expressed admiration for Nnamdi Kanu, the detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), following the emergence of a video showing how he schooled Justice Binta Nyako and Solomon Adegboyega Awolowo (SAN), counsel for the Nigerian Government.
The video was recorded in Abuja on Monday, May 19, 2024, where the Federal High Court denied Kanu's bail application.
Comrade Igboayaka O. Igboayaka, National President General of OYC, during a press briefing, suggested that the court's decision might be influenced by external factors.
Igboayaka commented on the courtroom dynamics, "The expressions of Justice Binta Nyako during Nnamdi Kanu's address indicate a possible influence from external authorities over the case."
He also mentioned the Supreme Court's past actions, noting its silence on Kanu's bail but its outspoken criticism of the 2017 Operation Python Dance, which resulted in civilian casualties. The Supreme Court had also disapproved of Kanu's abduction in Kenya, recognizing that he fled Nigeria due to a military attack, rather than jumping bail.
"It's unfortunate that Binta Nyako is not making any reference to the judgement of the Supreme Court, but believing and declaring that Nnamdi Kanu jumped bail contrary to the legal provision of the Supreme Court judgement. It's obvious that Justice Binta Nyako relied on the teleguided script of the Federal Government led by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to decide the bail application of Nnamdi Kanu filed by the lead counsel, Barr. Aloy Ejimakor," Igboayaka observed.
He commended Kanu for his courage in court and for his legal explanations, particularly regarding the Terrorism Prevention and Provision Act of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, which he believes should preclude the Federal Government from prosecuting Kanu.
Igboayaka asserted that Kanu's abduction in Kenya, allegedly by the Nigerian and Kenyan Governments, violates international and local laws, rendering any trial in Nigeria legally untenable.
He drew parallels between Kanu's situation and the historical abduction attempt of Umaru Dikko in Britain, emphasizing the gravity of such actions against international law.
Igboayaka urged President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to reconsider the prosecution of Kanu to prevent further complications and advocated for a political resolution and Kanu's unconditional release as a step toward restoring peace and stability in Nigeria.
He said, "The way Nnamdi Kanu was abducted, smuggled to Nigeria, there's no window of law to commence trial, for such trial by Justice Binta Nyako will lead to legal somersault of Nigeria to the diplomatic treaty they signed with Kenya.
"This is why Justice Binta Nyako has been instructed by President Bola Tinubu to keep delaying Nnamdi Kanu court case, the same delay tactics implored by President Muhammadu Buhari, but this delay is more dangerous to the existence of Nigeria than the fear they have about Nnamdi Kanu.
"It's obvious that Nnamdi Kanu abduction in Kenya is similar to abduction of Umaru Dikko in Britain on July 5, 1984, but the British government foiled that illegal arrest on the 6th of July, citing the breach of diplomatic law and stopped the move to bring Alhaji Umaru Dikko back to Nigeria.
"It's therefore regrettable and a demonstration of illegality and mockery to international law that even British government and Kenyan Government convened and abducted Nnamdi Kanu because he is an Igbo man. This is the empirical evidence that to be an Igbo man in Nigeria is a very herculean task and a life-threatening task, than to use legs to cross Atlantic Ocean.
"It's, therefore, necessary for the Federal Government led by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to discontinue the executive rascality and impunity of former President Muhammadu Buhari and speedily grant a political solution to Nnamdi Kanu's case and grant him unconditional release, as a viable means to national restoration of peace and stability in Nigeria."
