Former President Olusegun Obasanjo has faced criticism from Nigerians for his remarks about President Bola Tinubu and his leadership.
In an interview, Obasanjo stated that Tinubu took office without a clear plan for the country he was set to govern.
He cited his own experience as a military head of state, where he and his colleagues took a stand against colonialism and apartheid, earning respect from African countries and the international community.
Obasanjo questioned the effectiveness of a leader who unveils a three-point plan without proper preparation or consultation.
He said, “What do you say about the Nigerian president who came to office without a plan and then woke up and said a three-point plan? What are the three points? What are they going to achieve? Who are the people who have worked on it? Or will come and you will just open his mouth and make a pronouncement on something that has not been studied.
Let me again give you an example. When I was military head of state, we really decided to be part of the front-line state to fight indigenes of colonialism and apartheid and we were determined.
So, as a result of our policy, our pronouncement, and our determination, it became known as member of the front-line state. Even though there were thousands of kilometres of the frontline. And then we decided that we would do what needs to be done. And then we walked with the front-line state.
Where it was necessary, we went the whole hog with them, we did. At the end of the day, we succeeded, but it cost us something and what it cost us could have been wasted on anything, but our commitment made African countries and the international communities take us seriously and they respected us for it.”
Netizens expressed their disapproval of Obasanjo’s comments on social media.
@ctpnetwo: Obasanjo prepared, yet could not fix refineries for 8years.
Tinubu that is prepared fixed refineries within 18months
@Obijah20001: This's pure jealousy.
Baba OBJ didn't want his record of being the first military head of state and the first civilian president broken in the South West, but he is not God.
OBJ criticized MKO,Yardua, Jonathan, Buhari, and Tinubu.
OBJ thinks Nigeria is his personal property
@slimsegzy85: So when he came out of prison, he had a plan?
We can reflect on the lagos plan
@eyolofty: And with no plan he has reduced our debt servicing and revenue percentage from 98 to 67% in his first 1yr in office. I think we need such lack of planning.
@Sistaliano: Yes, he's right. He came without plans to privatize Nigerian refineries by selling them to himself, hiding behind Transcorp. And that's why those refineries are working today.
@tunisky: He was an accidental president in 1999. Someone who was just released from prison and got the ticket of the PDP as a former military Heads of State, with the consensus of other past military Heads of State. In a clear contest, he wouldn't have won the ticket.
@TJLoyo: Keep listening to our Baba, no worries but the fact remains they
@officialABAT is the most prepared President in Nigeria’s history. We can compare notes after finishing his 8 years tenure.
@DaresOlayemi: Yes oooo
Without plans two out of four refineries are working.
Omo if he had plans the four refineries will be working within 19months of his administration.
Without plans no more subsidy payments to the beneficiaries.
E better say as PBAT no get plan joor
@0ludayo: Even when his Boss Muritala was killed he first ran away before he later became Military Head of state,he had no plan!
