Why United can’t sign Osimhen

English Premier League side Manchester United are said not to have Nigerian striker Victor Osimhen on their summer targets list due to the EPL’s Profit and Sustainability Rules, PUNCH Sports Extra reports.

The PSR was introduced in 2015/16 to prevent clubs from overspending. It permits clubs to lose no more than £105m in a three-year cycle. The rules began to bite last season when Everton were handed a 10-point deduction for excess spending late last year, although it was reduced to six points on appeal.

In United’s case, Osimhen looks like a perfect fit to solve their goal scoring problems, but their major target, Matheus Cunha of Wolverhampton Wanderers, whom they are willing to trigger his £62.5m release clause.

According to United News, if Osimhen were the ideal partner for Cunha, United would pay £51m for the on-loan striker but his wage demands could prevent the club from completing a summer deal. Meaning they would also need to reduce their wage bill to afford a player like Osimhen.

It’s been reported that the 26-year-old has agreed to join the Red Devils in the summer, while they have also tabled a €20m-per-year offer for Osimhen.

According to Turkish journalist Ali Naci Küçük, United and Serie A side Juventus tabled an offer worth £17.1m per year net, which works out at around £330,000-a-week after tax. That would be £660,000-a-week before tax in the UK, making him their highest-paid player.

However, it seems all that calculation is about to be shelved by United as they are reportedly not keen on signing Osimhen.

Discussing the Red Devils’ recruitment drive, transfer expert David Ornstein told NBC Sports, “Their main focus for the No.10 position is Matheus Cunha of Wolverhampton Wanderers. He has a £62.5m release clause. He wants to come, but personal terms would still need to be agreed, which is not a formality.

“In the striker department, it is Liam Delap of Ipswich Town who is their No.1 target. He has a £30m release clause if Ipswich are relegated. But there are a lot of other suitors for him, including Chelsea. I think Liam Delap will decide before the European U21 Championship on where he wants to go.

“If Manchester United are to look at others, I’m assured it will not be Victor Osimhen. Despite reports you might be reading, he is not on the agenda for Manchester United. They will have other options because they might have to turn to them, or they stick with internal solutions such as Rasmus Hojlund, and they focus on other positions.”

Currently on loan from Napoli at Galatasaray, the Nigerian is in fine form, scoring 30 goals and seven assists in 35 games across all competitions this season.
