A video showing families protesting at the University College Hospital in Ibadan, Oyo State on Monday, November 11 after a prolonged electricity outage has sparked mixed reactions on social media.
The protest began due to a 17-day power disconnection by the Ibadan Electricity Distribution Company over unpaid bills.
Reports indicate that the hospital receives a monthly bill of N80 million due to its "band A" tariff structure.
The lack of electricity has impacted patients and essential services at the hospital, leading to delays in surgeries, diagnostic tests, and other critical medical procedures.
A video shared by Oyo Affairs on X shows patients and their families gathering at the hospital to voice their frustration.
"Patients and families are protesting the unavailability of water and electricity after IBEDC disconnected UCH's power for 17 days. This has affected vital hospital operations, causing delays in test results and surgeries, among other issues. UCH management claims the hospital falls under the “Band A” electricity tariff structure, requiring them to pay N80 million monthly," the post reads.
One protester at the scene was heard saying, “Stop killing people. People are dying here. The managers are thieves. We need light."
