Following the tension between Nigerian regulatory authorities and businessman Aliko Dangote, there have been mixed reactions from Nigerians.
While some believe Dangote’s claims, other disagree with his business methods.
Recall that Dangote has been seen on several media rounds expressing his discomfort with the regulator’s actions in the oil market.
The NMDPRA CEO, Farouk Ahmed accused Dangote of producing inferior products. This did sit well with the businessman, who refuted the claim.
In a clapback, Dangote revealed that NNPC operatives are using a blended plant in Malta and fake certificates to import bad fuel into Nigeria.
Reacting to this war, investigative journalist, David Hundeyin has accused the government of trying to destroy Dangote’s investment in the oil sector.
He believes there may be international involvement in the battle between Dangote and the Nigerian government.
Taking to social media to share his thoughts, Hundeyin wrote, “Jesus Christ, the Nigerian government and Nigeria's richest man have openly declared war on each other - because the government wants to destroy his investment. What unseen hand is behind this? There's 100% an international hand in play. This is more than just "NNPC" shenanigans.”
Emir of Kano, Sanusi Lamido Sanusi, has also come to the defense of Dangote. He stated that Dangote should not be blamed for buying dollars at lower rates when he was building his refinery because that was the actual rate the apex bank was selling to everybody at that time.
Senator Adams Oshiomhole during plenary urged his colleagues in the Senate to condemn the idea of importing diesel from other countries.
The former Edo State Governor believes some people in favour of the importation of diesel are doing so to enrich themselves. He also called for the investigations into the authority issuing out licenses, saying they are undermining the well-being of the country.
“I agree totally that we need to have a strong panel adhoc committee to carry out thorough investigation into the leadership of the institution that is responsible for issuing these licenses. Until we begin to punish, dismiss and prosecute people who are undermining our collective well-being, we are going to smile away. I do not believe these are errors of the head. I believe those involved in this are doing it on purpose to collect rent for their pocket, and undermine the economy of Nigeria.
“Your visit to Lagos was very well appreciated because the parliament must see what is going on in different parts of the country. So, I support this motion and I plead with my colleague that in unison we should condemn the idea of importing diesel which many of us are being poisoned by the products being imported by some group of people who wants to enrich their pockets.”
Meanwhile, Afrobeats singer Seun Kuti, son of Afrobeats legend Fela Kuti, in a video called out Dangote. He claimed the federal government spent $2 billion to purchase a 20 percent stake in Dangote Refinery while the government also spent the same amount to buy the entire Sinclair refinery in America.
He also raised concerns about why the government would spend such a huge amount on a few percentages in a refinery when the educational system continues to suffer immensely.
Seun Kuti said, “Dangote is the one who bought the entire Nigeria textile mill. What happened to all the mills? Do you know how much the federal government put into the refinery? They gave $2 billion. I did a live stream the day they announced they had given Dangote $2 billion for 20 percent of that refinery. That same day, Sinclair oil in America, sold the same size of refinery with rail tracks, trains and other things for $2 billion. The same Dangote has the audacity to come outside and say the government is sabotaging him.
In the last five years, has the government of Nigeria spent $2 billion on education for all the children in Nigeria?”
Other Nigerians have also reacted to the issue.
senefisa1: Dangote is one of Nigeria biggest problem after government and pastors.
djsteeno: The day you realize Dangote is one of our problems in this country. Your eyes go open
uncleama: Stark raving illiterate. Its 650000 barrels per day, keep quiet and stop capping what you don't know. Spouting hogwash confidently. The Sinclair refinery was built in 1916. Over a hundred years old. They are going to attempt to refurbish and renovate it. The NNPC paid only 1 billion dollars and could not pay the balance for the 20% which was supposed to be paid in crude oil. Stick to what you know and stop talking nonsense.
thecute_ose: Dangote destroyed lots of business in Nigeria. Dangote biz only strive in monopoly the truth be told.
