About eighteen people have been reported killed after four suicide bombers set off improvised explosive devices (IEDs) in Gwoza, Borno State on Saturday, June 29, 2024.

The attack which has been described as one of the deadliest in recent months, injured over 30 residents.

Reports indicate that these victims suffered injuries ranging from abdominal ruptures to skull and limb fractures.

According to the Director-General of SEMA, Barkindo Saidu, who witnessed the first blast, the first bomb blast occurred during a marriage ceremony held at Tashan Mararaba near the Fire Service in Gwoza town, adding that it was detonated by a female suicide bomber.

He said, “In my presence, at about 3 pm, the first bomb blast in Gwoza occurred, detonated by a female suicide bomber in the midst of the marriage ceremony celebration,” he reported.

“It affected more than 30 persons with various levels of injuries and instant death. Some minutes later, another blast occurred around General Hospital.”

A survivor from the first bomb attack said, the suicide bomber carried a baby on her back when she stormed the venue and detonated the IED.

As people gathered to bury those killed at the wedding, Saidu stated that a third bomber, a lady, detonated another IED causing a lot of casualties.

It was said that while emergency officials were in the hospital coordinating the rescue mission, a fourth blast went off by a female teenager.

“So far, 18 deaths comprise children, adult males, females, and pregnant women. 19 seriously injured were conveyed to Maiduguri in four ambulances,” Saidu said.

The recent wave of suicide attacks in Maiduguri on June 29, 2024, has caused fear and panic among Nigerians and residents of the State.

The authorities have said that at least 18 people were killed and 19 injured from the suicide attacks at a wedding, a hospital and a funeral.

It is widely known that the northern region has suffered a decade of violence by the jihadist group Boko Haram.

The military has since the attack imposed a curfew in Gwoza LGA.
