A police officer accidentally shot and killed his colleague named Tanko Emmanuel in Plateau State.
The incident took place on Wednesday, May 23, 2024, along Ahmadu Bello Way in Jos.
Security operatives were deployed to the area to maintain order by clearing traders from the road.
It was reported that the deceased was involved in an argument with a civilian when one of his colleagues mistakenly fired a bullet that struck and killed him instantly.
According to a source who spoke to SaharaReporters, “A 48-year-old policeman identified as Tanko Emmanuel was shot to death on Ahmadu Bello Way in Jos on Wednesday while enforcing the clearance of traders from the road on the state government’s orders.
“The team was led by Inspector Haruna. While the deceased policeman and a civilian were arguing, another officer fired a shot, resulting in Officer Tanko, who is from the Akwanga division, being struck by a stray bullet.
“May Almighty God grant his family the strength to bear this irreplaceable loss, and may Almighty Allah continue to protect security operatives from such tragic incidents.”
In a video that has surfaced, the policeman was captured lying dead on the ground by the road when one of his colleagues moved towards the body and wept.
The other officers were seen scattered around, dispersing the residents.
Efforts to reach the Plateau State Police Command spokesperson, Alabo Alfred, were unsuccessful as Saharareporters claim he did not respond to a text message or answer calls.
