VIDEO: Prayers for Meranda as she assumes her seat as first female Speaker

A video showing loyalists of the new Lagos State House of Assembly Speaker, Rt. Hon. Mojisola Lasbat Meranda, fervently praying for their principal has surfaced on social media, drawing varied reactions.

In the now-viral clip, the group can be seen clapping and praying earnestly as they expressed their support ahead of her assumption of the Speaker's seat for the first time since her election on January 13, 2025.

Meranda, who made history as the first female Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, had initially been operating from the former Deputy Speaker’s office, where she welcomed guests and well-wishers. However, she has now officially assumed her position in the Speaker’s office, with honorable members congratulating her once again on this groundbreaking achievement.

Her emergence as Speaker followed the impeachment of the former Speaker, Rt. Hon. Mudashiru Obasa, on the same day.

The impeachment motion, raised under Matters of Urgent Public Importance by Hon. Femi Saheed, accused Obasa of financial misconduct, abuse of office, and authoritarian leadership. The motion was unanimously adopted by 32 out of 40 members of the House, leading to Obasa’s removal.

Obasa, who served as Speaker since 2015, had a tenure marked by controversies, including allegations of high-handedness and misappropriation of public funds.
