US Embassy in Nigeria announces closure of office, gives date and sends message to Nigerians

The US Embassy in Abuja and the Consulate General in Lagos have announced their closure today, January 20, 2025.

The departments' temporary closure was announced on January 19 via the US Mission in Nigeria's X handle.

The closures will be in observance of Martin Luther King Jr. Day and the American Presidential Inauguration.

The announcement on the temporary closures shared via the official X account of the U.S. Mission in Nigeria (@USinNigeria) stated that: “The U.S. Embassy Abuja and Consulate General Lagos will be closed on Monday, January 20, to commemorate #MLKDay and the U.S. Presidential Inauguration.”

The notice informed the public of the temporary closure and also indicated that regular services would resume the following day.

Martin Luther King Jr. Day is a federal holiday in America honouring the civil rights leader's contributions to the fight for equality and justice.

The inauguration marks the formal commencement of a new four-year term for the incoming President of the United States - Donald Trump.
