UCL: 'The shock is bigger' — Leverkusen boss Alonso explains why Boniface is not in the squad against Brest

Bayer Leverkusen boss Xabi Alonso has confirmed that Nigerian striker Victor Boniface will not be available for their UEFA Champions League clash against Brest.

Boniface was involved in a ghastly accident after his Mercedes Benz collided with a truck on the A3 road between Bad Camberg and Idstein following Leverkusen's Bundesliga clash with Eintracht Frankfurt on Sunday, October 20.

The club, in a statement, confirmed that Boniface suffered minor injuries to his hand and is in stable condition.

The 23-year-old has not trained with the team since the accident, as manager Alonso believes that he needs time to recover from the shock.

“He is not in the squad. After what happened, it’s also a precautionary measure,” Alonso said in a pre-match press conference.

“He’s missing for health reasons. He has a small wound on his hand, a small cut on his right foot. But the shock is bigger. Physically, he is better but it is also an emotional issue. He feels good, but he is not ready for tomorrow.”

Ligue 1 side Brest will host the Bundesliga title holders at Stade du Roudourou, Guingamp in a UEFA Champions League early kickoff later today (Wednesday, October 23).
