The impeached Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, Mudashiru Obasa, has been accused of falsely portraying himself as a lawyer. The accusation arose after a Supreme Court document showed that the embattled lawmaker was not a registered legal practitioner.
The document came to light following a verification request submitted to the Supreme Court. It was disclosed that the response from the apex court regarding Obasa's lawyer status dated July 24, 2020, and signed by Gertrude Karenton-Mordi on behalf of the Supreme Court Chief Registrar.
The response was titled, "Re: Verification of Mudashiru Ajayi Obasa as a Solicitor and Advocate of the Supreme Court of Nigeria.”
In the document, the Supreme Court requested Obasa to make available the necessary documentation to register his name since there was no record of him with the apex court.
Fetus Akande, the spokesperson for the Supreme Court, confirmed the authenticity of the document.
Despite claiming to have obtained a law degree from Lagos State University (LASU) in 2006, Obasa’s name was not found in the Rolls of Legal Practitioners at the Supreme Court when checked on July 23, 2020.
On Monday, January 13, 2025, lawmakers impeached Obasa as Speaker and replaced him with his deputy, Mojisola Meranda. Obasa was ousted from his position while he was in the United States.
The new Speaker, Maranda, who represents Apapa Constituency 1, had previously served as the house's Chief Whip.
Obasa faced allegations of gross misconduct, financial misappropriation, financial impropriety, abuse of office, lack of transparency, and authoritarianism. He was also criticised for his strained relationship with Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu's administration and frequent absence from state functions.
