Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) has been sacked by the Kano Governorship Election Petition Tribunal.
On Wednesday, September 20, the tribunal declared the All Progressives Congress (APC) candidate, Nasir Gawuna, the winner of the Kano State governorship elections held on Saturday, March 18.
Recall that Governor Yusuf was sworn in on Monday, May 29, after the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) declared him the winner of the governorship polls in Kano State and was handed a certificate of return by the electoral commission.
How Gov Yusuf lost at tribunal
However, at the ruling of the election tribunal, which was declared virtually, the electoral commission was ordered to revoke the certificate of return given to Governor Yusuf and hand it over to APC's Gawuna.
Daily Trust reported that the court deducted 165,663 votes from Gov Yusuf's total as invalid, stating that the ballot papers (165,663) were not stamped or signed and declared null.
However, the election tribunal's verdict is still subject to an appeal at the Supreme Court, where Governor Yusuf will imminently challenge the tribunal's ruling.
