Tinubu unveils govt’s proposed minimum wage after meeting with Labour

President Bola Tinubu has appealed to organised labour to accept the proposed N62,000 minimum wage agreed upon by the federal, state governments, and the organised private sector.

Tinubu made this appeal after the meeting was adjourned to continue on Thursday, July 18, 2024.

In an effort to persuade union leaders to accept the proposal, Tinubu stated that the minimum wage did not have to be reviewed every five years. He suggested it could be reviewed every two, three or four years if the national assembly could amend the law.

This information was shared in a statement issued by Bayo Onanuga, the president's special adviser on information and strategy, shortly after Tinubu's meeting with the labour leader on Thursday, July 11.

During the meeting, held at the State House, briefings on the state of the economy were provided by the Coordinating Minister of the Economy, Wale Edun, and the NNPC GMD, Mele Kyari.

President Tinubu urged labour to accept the negotiated N62,000 as a first step in resolving the minimum wage issue, suggesting that further reviews could be done if the minimum wage law is amended.

"Why must we adjust wages every five years? Why not two, why not three years? What is a problem today, can be eased up tomorrow,” Tinubu reportedly said.

Prior to the meeting which has been adjourned untill next week, labour insisted on N250,000 as the new minimum wage.
