The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) has reiterated its commitment to punish anyone caught mutilating or defacing the naira notes.
CBN noted that selling, squeezing and even spraying the naira notes during occasions would warrant an arrest and jail time.
The agency bemoaned the rate at which Nigerians abuse the naira notes.
Assistant Director at the Currency Operations Department, Aladeen Badajo made this known during the commencement of the CBN two-day sensitisation fair held in Abeokuta, Ogun state, on June 10, 2021.
He said, “abuse of the currency attracts a penalty of not less than six months or a fine of not less than N50,000 or both”.
