Owoyele Sowore, a former presidential candidate, reacted to a video shared on social media showing the moment 76 #EndBadGovernance protesters arrived at the Federal High Court in Abuja for their scheduled arraignment.
According to Sowore, the protesters, some of whom are underaged, are being prosecuted by politicians who have "stolen" the nation's wealth.
"The Nigerian politicians who stole the funds meant for the future of these underaged kids are the same, prosecuting them for participating in protests seeking an END to BAD GOVERNANCE. #revolutionnow," he wrote in a post on Instagram on Friday, November 1.
Arraigned before Justice Obiora Egwuatu, the protesters looked malnourished, with four of them being rushed out of the courtroom as they couldn’t stand.
They were arrested and detained for their role in the nationwide August 1 to 10 protests, sparked by widespread economic hardship that led many Nigerians to take to the streets to express their grievances.
The protesters, arrested in Abuja, Kaduna, Gombe, Jos, Katsina, and Kano states, are being accused of treason, among other offenses.
The protesters include Nura Ibrahim, 24; Abdulbasi Abdusalami, 34; Ahmed Yusuf, 25; Awolu Abdulahi, 21; Umar Musa, 15; Muhammadu Mustapha, 16; among others
