Human rights activist and politician Omoyele Sowore has reportedly pleaded not guilty to the cybercrime charges filed against him by the Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, at the Federal High Court in Abuja.
Recall that Sowore was invited following the video he shared on social media where he confronted the police for conducting a stop and search along the airport road, causing traffic.
Sowore, who is currently on trial for calling Egbetokun an “illegal IGP” on his X page, moments after he was read his charges, dismissed them.
However, the amended charges were filled with several grammatical and spelling errors that were discovered before the commencement of the proceedings.
As a result, Sowore pleaded not guilty to each count.
Meanwhile, group of activists and civil society organisations on Wednesday, January 29, 2025, stormed the court to protest against the arrest and cybercrime charges filed against Sowore.
The protesters had gathered in front of the court, singing anti-government songs and demanding the immediate release of the activist, insisting that Sowore had not committed any offense by exposing the corruption in the police.
They held placards with inscriptions such as: #FreeSoworeNow; #FreeAdaramolaNowAnd10Others Now; #EndPoliceBrutality; #SackTheIGPNowForUnlawfulDetention.
Also in attendance at the court to show solidarity with Sowore were the President of the Nigeria Bar Association (NBA), Afam Usigwe and Senator Shehu Sani.
