Sanwo-Olu suspends aide for allegedly 'leaking' details about his govt

The Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has reportedly suspended his Senior Special Assistant on Print Media, Wale Ajetunmobi, over alleged misrepresentation of facts regarding the 2020 EndSARS protests.

Ajetunmobi, in a now deleted post on his X page, claimed that the majority of individuals allegedly involved in the burning of media station Television Continental (TVC) during the protests were “hunted down and executed.”

His post raised concerns about Sanwo-Olu’s government and leadership, prompting the governor to issue a suspension following the misrepresentation of his comment.

In a statement issued on Tuesday, November 26, 2024, by the Governor's Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Gboyega Akosile, condemned the post and stated that the Lagos State Government under Sanwo-Olu cherishes accuracy and professionalism in public communications.

Akosile mentioned that the Lagos State Government distances itself from the unfounded claims made by Ajetunmobi.

The statement read, “The Governor wishes to state categorically that his administration frowns at any form of extrajudicial punishment and will not be a part of any such action. That is not who we are. That is not our way.”

"Ostensibly, the “misrepresentation of facts” being referred to in the statement was a claim that by Ajetunmobi, that majority of those involved in the burning of Television Continental, TVC, during the #EndSARS protest in 2020, had been hunted down and executed."

However, Ajetunmobi released a statement to clarify his post. He wrote: “The full story of people who burnt down TVC in 2020 will be told one day, with gory clips and images. One thing to note: the majority of them have been hunted down and executed.”

When an X user questioned his decision to support extrajudicial killing, Ajetunmobi defended himself, saying, "Lol. You want to create a narrative in your head? Some of the people were chased by soldiers and exchange of fire occurred. Then arsonists were overpowered and killed. Others ran away. Is that extrajudicial killing to you?”
