Social and political commentator, Isaac Fayose has dismissed speculations that Governor Siminalayi Fubara would be impeached following the latest ruling by the Supreme Court.
The apex court, in its recent judgment, ordered Fubara to recognize pro-Wike lawmakers and present his budget to the lawmakers led by Martins Amaewhule.
The judgment sparked widespread speculations that the control of the state House of Assembly could be taken over by loyalists of FCT Minister, Nyesom Wike, with whom Fubara has been embroiled in a protracted political dispute.
Reacting in a video that has garnered several reactions, Fayose explained why it would be difficult to impeach Fubara.
"I've been reading different comments from all of you guys saying Fubara is gone, Fubara will go. They will impeach him. Oga, it is not that easy to impeach a governor. Governors in Africa, especially in Nigeria, are so powerful that the House of Assembly can recommend a governor for impeachment, but they still have to go through the CJ, the Chief Judge of that state," he said.
"It is the Chief Judge of the state that will set up a seven-man panel to investigate the allegations. If the panel submits a report that the governor is not guilty, the House of Assembly will just be making noise in vain. All they can do is to talk, shakara, and pretend like they want to impeach him. But you see, once your CJ is in your pocket, which I believe Rivers CJ is working with Fubara, impeachment becomes impossible."
In its far-reaching verdict on Friday, the apex court ordered the Federal Government to stop financial allocation to Rivers State until Fubara retraces his steps and presents the budget to the pro-Wike lawmakers, led by Martins Amaewhule.
The court also nullified the local government election conducted last year by Fubara.
The judgment tilted the balance of power in favor of Wike and the lawmakers in the state’s political crisis, which began in October 2023.
