Former Senator Shehu Sani has called on the Nigeria Police Force to release human rights activist Omoyele Sowore from indefinite detention.

On Monday, January 27, 2025, Sowore was detained indefinitely after refusing the bail conditions presented to him by the Nigeria Police Force upon arriving at the police facility following an invitation for questioning regarding a video he shared on social media.

Sowore had posted a video where he alleged police extortion along the airport road in Lagos.

In the video, Sowore can be seen confronting police officers conducting a stop and search on the busy road, accusing them of creating unnecessary traffic with their activity.

Upon arriving at the police facility, Sowore was given bail conditions that he rejected, describing them as illegal.

The conditions required Sowore to provide a level 16 civil servant as a surety and surrender his international passport.

Taking to his social media page, Sowore wrote, “I refuse to participate in any arrangement that undermines my personal integrity.

I’d rather remain in custody until this joke is over.”

Reacting to the recent development, Shehu Sani wrote, “Sowore’s fundamental human rights should be respected. He should be released and not detained “indefinitely”.
