Reno Omokri, a political commentator and a prominent member of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), has restated his belief that PeterGregory Obi, the presidential candidate of the Labour Party (LP), was "used" before the general elections.
This statement follows the emergence of a photo showing former president Olusegun Aremu Obasanjo, a strong supporter of Obi before the election, alongside the First Lady, Oluremi Tinubu over the weekend.
The meeting between the two was made public by the First Lady’s media aide, Busola Kukoyi, via X.
Sharing photos of the pair, Kukoyi wrote: “Former President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, Chief Olusegun Obasanjo, and the First Lady of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, after receiving the Former President who came to felicitate on the Sallah Celebration on Monday, June 17.”
Reno Omokri, who has been critical of Peter Gregory Obi, introduced a political angle to the visit, suggesting that Obasanjo's apparent support for the Tinubus indicates that the former Anambra governor was merely used to ensure Atiku Abubakar, the former Vice President, lost the election.
Obasanjo and Atiku have had a strained relationship since the end of their tenure in 2007.
An excerpt from his Facebook post reads: "First, it was the wearing of the Tinubu logo. A visit has now followed. But you can trust that they will still argue and refuse to accept that Peter Obi was used. Pride mixed with stubbornness will prevent them from seeing and learning from the now obvious truth. And their failure to learn from the past will make them repeat it in 2027."
"President Obasanjo does not like our candidate. But he is a strategist. He knew that if he came out openly against our candidate in the Peoples Democratic Party, it would win him sympathy votes during both the primaries and the general election. So, what did he do?"
His post comes barely 48 hours after Obasanjo was seen wearing a cap with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s insignia.
MyNigeria reported a video of Obasanjo wearing a cap branded with Tinubu’s insignia at an event attended by some African dignitaries.
Despite coming from the same Southwest geopolitical zone, Obasanjo and Tinubu are known to belong to different political affiliations.
