The Athletics Federation of Nigeria (AFN) has denied reports that they failed to register Nigerian sprint athlete Favour Ofili for the women's 100 meters race at the ongoing Paris Olympics.
Ofili took to social media on Tuesday, July 30, to announce that she will not be competing in the 100 meters race because the Athletics Federation of Nigeria (AFN) and the Nigeria Olympics Committee (NOC) allegedly failed to register her for the event.
“It is with great regret that I have just been told I will not be competing in the 100 meters at this Olympic Games,” she said.
“I qualified, but those with the AFN and NOC failed to enter me. I have worked for 4 years to earn this opportunity. For what?
In response to these claims, AFN Technical Director, Samuel Onikeku, expressed his shock, explaining that the 21-year-old was registered for 100m, 200m and the 4x100m relay.
“We registered Ofili for the 100m, 200m and the 4x100m relay. We don’t know how her name got missing in the 100m. This is our stand as a federation,” he told AFN Media.
The African record holder is one of Nigeria' hopes for winning medals at the ongoing Paris 2024 Olympics.
