Peter Obi, the 2023 presidential candidate of the Labour Party, has criticized the Nigerian judicial system as being weak and compromised.

Speaking at Justice Anthony Aniagolu's Memorial Lecture at Godfrey Okoye University (GOUNI) in Enugu on Tuesday, May 14, 2024, Obi asserted that the judiciary is inclined to favor those who offer the most.

The former Governor of Anambra shared his experience of winning the governorship election, only to have another candidate declared the winner.

He recounted his ordeal, noting that he sought justice through the courts and, after three years, was vindicated.

Obi detailed how he was impeached just one year into his tenure but was reinstated by the Supreme Court thanks to judges who upheld the rule of law.

He expressed gratitude for the integrity of the judges during his tenure, contrasting it with the current judiciary, which he perceives as weakened and tainted by corruption.

Obi lamented that the qualities of the jurists who presided over his case are now scarce, adding that, "Our judiciary is weak and compromised by the executive and the highest bidder."
