Obasa wins suit against removal as Lagos speaker, gets N500k for damages

The Lagos High Court in Ikeja has ruled that the removal of Mudashiru Obasa as Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly in January was illegal, unconstitutional, and invalid.

In the judgement delivered on Wednesday, the court also nullified all proceedings and resolutions made by the Assembly on 13 January—the day Obasa was removed from office.

Obasa was reinstated in March after President Bola Tinubu, a former governor of Lagos State, intervened in the matter. Following his return, he filed a lawsuit challenging the legality of his removal.

In his suit, Obasa listed the Lagos State House of Assembly and Mojisola Meranda, who took over as Speaker after his ouster, as defendants.

The court’s decision effectively restores Obasa’s position and voids all legislative actions taken during the brief period of his removal.
