Popular social media commentator Isaac Fayose has reacted to the heated exchange between the Deputy Chief Whip of the Senate, Onyekachi Nwaebonyi and former Minister of Education, Oby Ezekwesili.
In his response to the viral video of the confrontation, Fayose lamented what he described as a complete loss of respect for women within the Upper Legislative Chamber.
He questioned why a senator would openly disrespect a woman, especially in a discussion centered on a sexual harassment allegation involving another woman.
“The Senate set up a committee to investigate sexual harassment against a woman. Women, alongside men, sat at the table to deliberate on the issue. Yet, one of the men who was supposed to be part of the committee disrespected and demeaned another woman,” Fayose said.
He further criticized the Senate's gender imbalance, stating, “Our Senate is already flawed—it’s a men’s club. Out of 109 senators, 105 are men, and only four are women. With one already suspended, just three remain. That’s a problem. Women have been effectively sidelined."
He added, "Now, the Senate sets up a committee to investigate sexual harassment, and yet, another former minister is disrespected in the process. This Senate clearly has no regard for women.”
The altercation between Nwaebonyi and Ezekwesili took place during a Senate hearing on Tuesday, March 25.
The session was convened to address allegations of sexual misconduct leveled against Senate President Godswill Akpabio by Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan.
