NPFL: Rivers United responds to Finidi George links

Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) outfit Rivers United have debunked reports linking Finidi George with a move to the club.

Following the dismissal of long-serving coach Stanley Eguma last season, Evans Ogenyi was appointed as the interim manager to steer the team until the end of the season.

The 2022 NPFL champions have been linked with Finidi George and former Rangers coach Imama Amapakabo as potential replacements for next season.

However, the club's media officer, Charles Mayuku, has dismissed these reports as baseless.

"We've heard rumors about Finidi George and Imama Amapakabo, and soon we'll even hear about Jose Mourinho," Mayuku told PUNCH Sports Extra.

"Those are just rumors. We're resuming training on Wednesday ahead of next season."

Finidi George ascended to the throne as Super Eagles head coach after serving as assistant under José Peseiro for 20 months.

The 53-year-old however stepped down from his new role after just two matches in charge of the team following Nigeria's disappointing results in the FIFA World Cup qualifier matches against South Africa and Benin Republic.

The Super Eagles were held to a 1-1 draw against Bafana Bafana at the Godswill Akpabio Stadium in Uyo before losing 2-1 to Benin Republic in the next encounter putting their World Cup campaign in jeopardy.
