Senator Oyelola Yisa Ashiru, representing Kwara South, has described the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency, NDLEA, as the most corrupt and compromised government agency in Nigeria.
He made this statement while discussing the debate on a ‘Bill for an Act to establish National Institute for Drug Awareness and Rehabilitation.’
The Senator argued that the NDLEA has failed in carrying out its duties, thereby justifying the need for the creation of another drug agency.
According to him, the NDLEA’s shortcomings have contributed to the increase in drug trafficking in the country.
Senator Ashiru said, “The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency is corrupt and compromised; hence, I support the creation of the National Institute for Drug Awareness and Rehabilitation.”
The bill for an act to establish the National Institute for Drug Awareness and Rehabilitation was sponsored by Senator Sani Hanga Rufai, representing Kano Central Senatorial District.
Rufai explained that “the proposed agency will coordinate and promote drug awareness, prevent substance abuse and facilitate the rehabilitation of drug users and related matters.”
