The Federal Capital Territory High Court has ordered that former Executive Secretary of the National Health Insurance Scheme, NHIS, Usman Yusuf, be remanded at Kuje Correctional Centre in Abuja on Monday, February 3, 2025.
The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) had arrested the NHIS former boss and arraigned him before Justice Chinyere E. Nwecheonwu on charges of corruption.
Yusuf was arraigned on a five-count charge bordering on embezzlement and fraud to the tune of ninety million, four hundred and thirty-nine thousand, one hundred and seventy-eight Naira.
Yusuf’s lawyer, O.I. Habeeb, had requested that the NHIS former boss remain in EFCC custody until the court hears his bail application, however, Justice Nwecheonwu declined the request, stating that once a defendant is arraigned, custody is transferred to the Nigerian Correctional Service.
The court then ordered his detention at Kuje Correctional Centre and adjourned the hearing of his bail application to February 12, 2025.
