Bello El-Rufai, the son of Nasir El-Rufai, says his father was the first person to attempt to grant local governments full autonomy when he was governor of the state.
El-Rufai, a member of the House of Representatives representing Kaduna North, said that history will vindicate his father and his efforts.
"Mal. @elrufai was the first Governor in Northern Nigeria to attempt granting local governments full autonomy. History will vindicate Mallam Nasir El-Rufai," he wrote on X.
This follows a Supreme Court of Nigeria order that the federal government must pay allocations for the Local Government Areas directly to their accounts.
This comes after the Supreme Court of Nigeria barred the Federal Government from paying local government allocations through state governments.
The ruling was made in the local government autonomy suit filed by the Attorney General of the Federation (AGF), Lateef Fagbemi, on behalf of the Nigerian Government.
According to Justice Emmanuel Akomaye Agim, from now on, no more payments of local government area allocations will be made to state government accounts.
The court also prohibited the governors from receiving, tampering with, or withholding funds meant for local governments.
Furthermore, the court barred the governors from dissolving democratically elected officials for local governments and deemed such actions a breach of the 1999 Constitution.
