Following the recent decree in Rivers State, Nigerians have taken to social media to voice their concerns about the issues plaguing the country.
In response to the turmoil in Rivers State, President Bola Tinubu, during a nationwide broadcast on Tuesday, March 18, 2025, suspended Governor Sim Fubara, his deputy, and members of the House of Representatives. He appointed former Chief of Naval Staff, Admiral Ibokette Ibas, as an administrator of the state’s affairs.
This action upset many Nigerians, who criticised President Tinubu and called for the suspension of Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, due to his involvement in the political crisis in Rivers State.
Wike, the immediate past governor of Rivers, has been at loggerhead with his successor, Fubara, which has escalated to the House of Representatives filing a motion to impeach him, accusing the governor of misconduct.
In reaction to these events, a social media user named @Tenibegiloju202 blamed the country’s predicament on the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) Chairman, Mahmood Yakubu.
He accused Yakubu of turning off the IREV system midway through the 2023 presidential election, allowing for manipulation in the polls and the announcement of Bola Tinubu as the winner.
The user questioned whether Wike was above the law and untouchable, as many expected President Tinubu to suspend Wike alongside Fubara.
He wrote, “Yakubu Mahmood, heaven will punish you. What we are seeing today is the result of ur decision to off IREV midway to the much-awaited election. That singular decision is the reason we are witnessing these abnormal situations, it is ridiculous and disappointing that Wike is truly above the law and untouchable.”
