Okechukwu Anthony Onyegbule, popularly known as Okey Bakassi, an actor and comedian has dismissed colleague Kenneth Okonkwo’s remarks about Peter Obi, the 2023 presidential candidate of the Labour Party.
Bakassi in a podcast, said Kenneth Okonkwo has never won any election and therefore has no right to speak against Obi’s strength, wisdom, capacity or anything.
In his defense of Peter Obi, he noted that Obi was a two-time Governor of Anambra state who, despite being impeached, went to court and fought until he reclaimed his mandate.
Bakassi further stated that Peter Obi was the only candidate who joined the race eight months before the election date and managed to put up a fight. He added that Obi also won in Lagos and Abuja, places presidents had to win before emerging as presidents.
“I don’t know what Kenneth is trying to achieve. I don’t think Kenneth is in a very good position to make utterances about Peter Obi. His profile, his direction, his wisdom, his capacity, his strength, anything. Kenneth is nowhere to make all those claims.
Kenneth has never won any election in Nigeria. He’s my colleague, he’s an actor, a lawyer, I’m an actor, an engineer. He’s never won any election.
Peter Obi has won election twice. He was a two-time governor of Anambra state. He has survived trials and tribulations in the electoral process. He was impeached, he went to court, won his mandate back. If it’s about a fight, he has shown it.
Obi went into a race eight months before the election date and he was able to put up a fight. For the first time any candidate who does not have a major party won Abuja and Lagos.
There has never been a President who has been president without winning those two places and INEC cannot deny that.
The man has proven himself as a fighter, a people’s mobiliser, a person with integrity. He has nothing to prove to Kenneth. Kenneth has not won one election,” Bakassi said.
Recall that Kenneth Okonkwo announced his break away from the Labour Party and criticized Peter Obi’s style of leadership, noting that he lacks the will to lead Nigeria.
Okonkwo had previously supported Obi’s presidential ambition but made a U-turn, hinting that he has failed to build a strong party base and has shown inconsistency towards the Labour Union’s efforts to fight for the soul of the party.
He also questioned Obi’s ability to secure electoral victories and confront the country’s ‘kakistocrats’ and ‘kleptocrats’ head-on, adding that he needed a more decisive, bold, and brave leader with integrity and team spirit to achieve his vision for Nigeria.
