The Kaduna state government has directed all schools within the state to remain closed until further notice.
According to the state’s permanent secretary, ministry of education, Phoebe Sukai Yayi, schools in the state will not resume on Monday, January 18, as approved by the federal government.
She noted that the date for the resumption of schools will be communicated after the further assessment of the COVID-19 situation in the state.
“We want to make it categorically clear that Kaduna State is yet to fix a date for resumption to schools.
“In as much as the federal government has declared 18th January 2021 as the date for resumption Kaduna state is yet to declare a date for resumption," she said
However, following a hike in coronavirus cases, the reopening of schools slated for Monday, January 18, has sparked debates among the House of Representatives
Chairman of the House committee on basic education, Julius Ihonvbere in a statement was of the view that reopening the schools will pose a significant threat to the country, thereby causing a second wave of the virus.
