Police have beefed up security following a message warning of an imminent attack by Fulani herdsmen in Imo State.
The message, posted in Umuoba Community, Irete, Owerri West LGA of Imo State, reads, “Fulani herdsmen, we are coming, wait for us at any time, at any moment now. Wait for us.”
In a statement, the Police Public Relations Officer, Imo Command, DSP Okoye Henry, said preliminary investigations revealed that this message is a calculated attempt by certain elements to incite unnecessary fear and apprehension among the public and to destabilize peace and security. currently enjoyed in the state.
He said, "In response, the command has launched a comprehensive investigation to identify and apprehend the individuals responsible for disseminating this threat, and to ascertain their motives. We remain committed to ensuring that any attempt to undermine public safety will be met with swift and decisive action.
"The Commissioner of Police, Imo State Command, CP Aboki Danjuma wishes to reassure the public—especially the residents of Irete—that there is no cause for alarm. In addition, the Divisional Police Officer, together with local vigilantes, has visited the community to assess the situation and engage with residents, further reinforcing our proactive measures to ensure their safety. Okoye also called on all members of the public to remain vigilant and to report any suspicious activities immediately to the nearest police station.
