Senate President Godswill Akpabio has commended the Igbos for their industrious nature and their ability to develop the places they live, regardless of their location.

Speaking during the night of tribute held in honor of Ubah on Monday night, November 18, Akpabio stated that after the civil war, Igbos who became billionaires are self-made.

Listing some of the billionaires, Akpabio mentioned Allen Onyema, the CEO of Air Peace; Emeka Ofor, an oil magnate, among others.

The senator hailed the Igbos for their outstanding way of life. However, he raised concerns over the attitude of other Nigerians who migrate to other regions and live there for many years without building any structure.

Akpabio said, “Almost all the Igbo people that I know, after the civil war, the billionaires are all self-made. Whether in the aviation industry, you look at Onyeama, Chief Okonkwo, Ifeanyi Uba was also there. I can tell you that the Igbos are self-made.

The Igbos are very proud people, they are mercantile, they are the only elite group in Nigeria, that when they enter Kano state, they build houses by themselves. They don’t rent. When they enter Lagos, they own more than three local governments, build houses and live there.

There is no place they go to where they don’t make it. But other Nigerians are not like that. They will come to my state, rent houses, stay for 15 years and go back without building a structure. But the Igbos are not the same.”
