The Secretary to the Government of the Federation, George Akume, has expressed concerns about the Nigeria Labour Congress NLC minimum wage demands, calling them unrealistic.
He shared his thoughts during a meeting with the National Executive Council (NEC) of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) in Abuja on Thursday, June 6.
Akume stated that he would struggle to pay his four drivers N100,000 each month as it would be a challenging financial burden.
“I can't afford to pay my driver one hundred thousand because they are four,” he explained.
Seeking support from the Christian community for negotiations on the minimum wage, Akume questioned where the money would come from to meet such demands. “Where do we get that money from?”
Organized labour is pushing for a national minimum wage increase from the proposed N60,000 to N494,000.
The NLC initiated a nationwide strike on Monday, June 3, 2024, leading the shutdown of the country’s operations.
Negotiations are currently underway to address the NLC ‘s concern.
