'I am 31 now' — Troost-Ekong on Super Eagles retirement

Nigerian defender William Troost-Ekong has dismissed talks concerning his retirement from the Super Eagles after the 2025 African Cup of Nations.

Troost-Ekong, 31, is the oldest member of the Super Eagles team with Moses Simon (29) and Alex Iwobi (28) as the second and third oldest respectively.

Speaking in a press briefing ahead of Nigeria's last AFCON qualifier against Rwanda, the Al Khalood defender disclosed that retirement is a question Nigerians throw at him quite often, but he believes it is too early.

“It is a question I get asked a lot by Nigerians, but I think it is a bit too early,” he said.

“I am 31 now, and I think I am playing my best football in recent years. We are only talking about 12 months from now, so after that, we will see,” Troost-Ekong explained.

“It will not be my decision; it will be up to the coaches. Once I feel I am no longer an asset to the team, I will have that discussion.

“But I still have some targets in sight—that will be the AFCON in 2025 and the World Cup in 2026. We’ll see what happens afterward.”

Troost-Ekong was adjudged the best player at the 2023 African Cup of Nations in Côte d'Ivoire.

The Dutch-born Nigerian international is also among the 10-man shortlist for the 2024 African Footballer of the Year award.
