Hundreds of UI students protest 82-day power outage in UCH

Several students from the University of Ibadan in Oyo State have embarked on a peaceful protest against the ongoing power outage at the University College Hospital (UCH) in Ibadan.

UCH serves as the teaching hospital where medical students from UI receive their training. Reports indicate that UCH has been without power outage for the past year due to outstanding debts owed to the Ibadan Electricity Distribution Company, IBEDC.

In March 2024, IBEDC reportedly disconnected the hospital’s power supply due to unpaid electricity bills.
The same situation occurred in 2023, and the hospital remains disconnected till now.

As a result, UI students organized a peaceful protest on Wednesday, January 22, 2025, to voice their concerns about the situation at UCH.

In an interview with Daily Post, President of the Students’ Union, SU, Bolaji Aweda said, “We are protesting against what is happening. And, of course, our students are affected.

For 82 days, there has been no light at UCH, and this is due to the inability of UCH to pay its electricity bill to IBEDC.

IBEDC has demanded that UCH settle its debt before they will restore power,” he said.
