In September 2024, some states in Nigeria will have new elections. According to the schedule, at least three states will hold elections, including local government and the governorship election in Edo State.

The elections range from local government polls to the governorship election. Many governors have started organizing local government elections after the Supreme Court ruled that local governments are independent and not controlled by state governments.

The court said local governments should manage their finances and operations without interference from state governments, as outlined in the 1999 Constitution.

This decision has increased pressure on governors to conduct local elections on time to ensure local governments receive their federal funds.

List of Elections in September 2024

1. Edo State Governorship Election

The top candidates are Asue Ighodalo (PDP), Senator Monday Okpebholo (APC), and Olumide Akpata (Labour Party). A recent poll shows that 43% of respondents support Ighodalo, 20% favor Okpebholo, and 9% back Akpata, while 28% remain undecided. The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) reported that 68.3% of Edo's newly printed voter cards have been collected.

2. Anambra Local Government Election

Ten years after the last election, Anambra will hold new local government elections on September 28, 2024. The state government is likely to declare a public holiday to allow voters to participate.

3. Kwara Local Government Election

The Kwara State Independent Electoral Commission has announced that its local government election will be held on September 21, 2024, with plans to ensure the process runs smoothly.
