Reports indicate that a section of the Dangote Refinery has been destroyed by fire.

Explosions were heard on Wednesday, June 26, 2024, following a serious fire outbreak at the refinery.

The refinery is located in the Ibeju-Lekki area of Lagos State. In the video circulating, thick black smoke accompanied by fire can be seen coming out of the refinery.

The Dangote group has not yet commented on the fire outbreak at the refinery or if there were any casualties.

Aliko Dangote better known as Africa’s richest man, previously revealed that he had to overcome a strong group of local and foreign mafia before establishing the $19 billion refinery.

According to Dangote, the mafia in the oil sector, who are stronger than drug dealers, attempted to sabotage the refinery project.

During the Afreximbank annual meeting and AfriCaribbean Trade and Investment Forum in the Bahamas, Dangote stated that he never expected the resistance to be so extreme.

The Vice President of Oil and Gas at Dangote Industries Limited (DIL), Devakumar Edwin, had previously accused International Oil Companies (IOCs) in Nigeria of doing everything to frustrate the success of Dangote Oil Refinery and Petrochemicals.

Edwin, speaking to a group of energy editors at a one-day training program organised by the Dangote Group, raised concerns about the NMDPRA’s indiscriminate granting of licenses to marketers to import dirty refined products into the country.
