The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has said it has not surrendered after threatening a nationwide protest against the closure of schools in four northern states for Ramadan.
MyNigeria reported that the governments of Katsina, Kebbi, Bauchi and Kano announced the closure of both private and public schools to enable students focus on the Ramadan fasting period.
However, many Nigerians slammed the policy which affects non-muslims and private schools owners.
Reacting, NANS issued a 72-hour ultimatum for the states to end the policy or face a nationwide protest.
However, no protest from NANS has been witnessed more than 72 hours after the ultimatum, just as schools remain closed in the four northern states.
When MyNigeria reached out the NANS Public Relations Officer, Samson Ajasa, he said the association was still carrying out fact findings before proceeding on a protest.
He said, "I received some calls from some northern states, from the office of the student desk of the government, that the situation in their state is not complete closure of schools. They also said most of the schools, especially the secondary schools were already at end of term.
"We also need the opportunity to do proper findings and identify schools that are truly closed. I've given that tax to some people over. If we can have just two or four schools with pictorial evidence and video evidence, that they are truly closed, that will be an evidence against them,
"I've received a lot of calls alleging that its probably because I'm from Southwest, that's why I'm releasing such kind of attack on the school closure policy and threatening a national protests and things like that. But I stand on my on my decision that no, if truly this is what we are having, then they must face it. And I'm not going back on it. So it's not as if we have surrendered or a lost the struggle at all."
