The Deputy Governor of Lagos State, Obafemi Hamzat, has faced criticism for suggesting that Nigerian youths waste their time on frivolous activities rather than engaging in meaningful endeavours.
Speaking at a youth seminar organized by the Ministry of Youth and Social Development to mark International Youth Day at Alausa, Ikeja, on Thursday, Hamzat encouraged Nigerian youths to focus on informative articles and educational videos that offer practical solutions to real world problems.
He advised young citizens to develop a habit of reading books and embrace digital technology, believing that these practices can enhance personal growth and contribute to state development.
“Stop wasting your time on frivolities. Rather, focus on practical things. Always read well-equipped books that can be useful to you and will change your lives for the better, as reading books will keep you informed and more educated,” Hamzat said.
Hamzat highlighted the importance of technology in today’s globalized world, emphasizing that it enables individuals to drive change and progress.
He pointed out that traditional education, centered on classroom learning, no longer adequately prepares individuals to succeed in a world shaped by technological advancements.
He urged Nigerians to use social media platforms to explore valuable content that can enhance their lives.
Many Nigerians expressed their disagreement with Hamzat’s remarks.
