Nigerian Afrobeats singer Davido faced criticism after his comment stating that the Nigerian economy is in a terrible state.
During an interview, Davido mentioned that immigrants are reluctant to return to Africa due to the bad state of the economy.
Using Nigeria as an example, he pointed out the rise in fuel and food prices, as well as currency fluctuations.
“It is not cool back home. The economy is in shambles,” Davido said.
Several Nigerians took to social media to express their disapproval of Davido’s statement.
A chieftain of the All Progressives Congress, APC, Joe Igbokwe, demanded that the singer retract his comment about the country, stating that Nigeria played a significant role in shaping the singer’s success.
“My in-law Davido has made me sad by telling the world in America that Nigeria’s economy is in shambles. This is very sad. I will advise him to retract the statement ASAP. Nigeria made Davido. QED!!!”
Bashir Ahmed, a former aide to Nigerian former president Muhammadu Buhari, described Davido’s comment as disappointing and unpatriotic.
“Selling out your country from foreign soil is so disappointing and unpatriotic. Public figures like Davido should know that.
“They should act and be seen as good ambassadors for Nigeria wherever they find themselves. @NOA_Nigeria!”
However, there are many Nigerians who agreed with the singer.
