The Federal High Court in Abuja has denied bail to suspended Deputy Commissioner of Police, Abba Kyari.

During the judgment delivery on Wednesday, June 19, 2024, Justice Emeka Nwite held that Kyari’s bail is at the court’s discretion according to section 161 (2) of the Administration of Criminal Justice Act.

The judge stated that the defendant has not presented any evidence that would justify granting him bail.

It was mentioned that bail can only be granted if the alleged offenses carry a two-year term in accordance with section 162 of the ACJA.

On May 22, 2024, the judge granted Kyari temporary two-week bail to allow him to go home and complete the burial rites of his mother.

However, upon request for an extension, the two weeks were prolonged by a week. Kyari met the bail conditions on June 1 and was released the same day.

During the hearing on Wednesday, Justice Emeka Nwite declined to extend the previous order but agreed to expedite the hearing.

Kyari is currently facing 24 charges filed by the Nigeria Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), with his case carrying a maximum sentence of 25 years.

The former deputy commissioner of police is being tried for a drug-related offense.
