Charly Boy applauds Burkina Faso after lawmakers take a 50 percent pay cut

Music veteran and media personality Charles Oputa, popularly known as Charly Boy, has applauded President of Burkina Faso, Captain Ibrahim Traore, for his recent move to the West African country.

Lawmakers in the country agreed to reduce their salaries after rights groups protested that their $3,000 per month salary was too high for one of the poorest nations on earth.

Recall that the National Transitional Council (CNT) was formed last year after former President Blaise Compaore stepped aside amid mass protests over his bid to change the constitution to stay in power.

The CNT is composed of politicians, soldiers, and civil society leaders.

Charly Boy, an ally of Peter Obi, the presidential candidate of the Labour Party in the 2023 elections, praised the move in an Instagram post.

"Captain Ibrahim Traore, President of Burkina Faso, reduces ministers' and politicians' salaries by 30%, increases workers' salaries by 50%, and refuses to accept a president’s salary while maintaining his military captain’s salary," he wrote.

Honore Nombre, vice president of the CNT, said lawmakers had agreed to forfeit a number of benefits initially offered and would now be paid a total of 880,000 CFA francs ($1,580) per month instead of 1.7 million CFA francs.

"The CNT is aware that we exist as a result of the people and for the people," Nombre said.
