Nnamdi Kanu, the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), has said spending an additional year in detention won’t kill him.
Kanu, who was re-arrested in 2021 by the federal government to stand trial for the charges of terrorism, has spent four years in the custody of the Department of State Security (DSS).
Speaking to journalists on Tuesday, September 24, 2024, as court resumed his trial in the Federal High Court in Abuja, Kanu stated that the court has refused to abide by the determination of the Supreme Court on his request for bail.
As a result, Kanu demanded that Justice Binta Nyako recuse herself from the trial as he lacked confidence in her presiding over his case.
Justice Nyako accepted to step aside from Kanu’s case and ordered the case file be sent to the Chief Justice for reassignment.
“I am surprised that a high court refused to abide by the determination of the Supreme judgment. The cherrypicking of what was contained in the judgment is what I am against. It should be implemented holistically. I am not against any trial; after all, I am innocent.
They have nothing against me, but there can not be any trial when the key section of the Constitution and a key section of the Supreme Court judgment have been violated by a court of law.
“This is my Fourth year in solemn confinement in detention. The fifth year won’t kill me,” he said.
