Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan, representing Kogi Central, has accused Senate President Godswill Akpabio of maligning her because she rejected his advances.
In an interview on Arise TV on Friday, February 28, Natasha revealed that her issues with the Senate President began on December 8, 2023, when she visited his home in Akwa Ibom, a day before their birthdays.
Natasha stated that while Akpabio offered to show her around his house, with her husband walking behind her on the phone, he proposed to her. She claimed Akpabio hastened his steps and, when they reached a sitting room, he asked, “Do you like my house?” She replied, “Of course, sir. Every room has a nice interior and quality taste.”
She mentioned that he then said, “Now that you are a senator, I’m going to create time for us to spend quality moments here. You will enjoy it.”
Shocked by his statement, she pulled away and turned around to see her husband, wondering if he had heard Akpabio’s proposal.
“At that point, I just pulled away and didn’t understand what that meant. When I turned around, I saw that my husband was already near me. My husband looked at me and then at him. I was beginning to wonder if he heard part of that or not. And the Senate President also had that thought if my husband heard. Then the Senate President said, ‘Oh, let me show you my chapel.’ While we were going to the chapel, we walked in silence.”
Explaining what happened after they had left the Senate President’s house around 11 pm, Natasha stated that her husband asked her what the Senate President said to her. She said, “My husband asked me, ‘What did the Senate President whisper to you? What was he telling you?’ I thought about whether or not to tell him because the next day was a big day, and I know how much my husband adores the Senate President. He loves him as a brother. My husband would do anything to support him. I told my husband nothing. When we went to bed, I laid to my left, while my husband wrapped his hands around me and said, ‘My love, you know you can tell me anything. What did the Senate President tell you?’ Then I said nothing, besides it’s my birthday in a few minutes. Then my husband told me he doesn’t want to see me travel out of the country alone and I should not go to the Senate President’s house. I told him okay, no problem.”
According to her, in February, she attempted to move a motion on the Ajaokuta Steel Company for investigations to be carried out, but Senator Akpabio turned it down multiple times.
She claimed that she had appealed to some senators to speak to the Senate President to allow her motion to scale through. Some of them suggested she apologize to him and appeal to him.
“In February, I wanted to move a motion for the investigation on the ills in the Ajaokuta Steel Company. I listed that motion five times. It was the sixth time it was listed on the order paper and was approved. Many senators can attest to that. Each time it was listed, he would say, ‘Senator Natasha, we can’t take this motion because the vote of the Senate does not accommodate it.’ Or he would speak on others and let it drag so before my motion is taken, the time will be spent.”
Natasha then revealed that she went to see Akpabio at his office, and he repeated his proposals.
“I went to him in his office and said, ‘Senate President, you know how important this Ajaokuta Steel Company is to me, my people, and Nigerians. I’ve noticed that you have stepped down this motion. As a matter of fact, a lot of senators have told me to go and see him and plead with him so that he will take it. So, I was like, sir, why can’t you take this motion?’ He then said, ‘Natasha, I’m the chief presiding officer of the Senate. You can enjoy a whole lot if you take care of me.’ At that point, I said, ‘Sir, I will pretend I didn’t hear this.’ He said, ‘Well, the ball is in your court.’ I left his office and when I got home, I told my husband to please speak to the Senate President to allow my motion to scale through.”
She further said that she had to speak to her husband to reach out to the Senate President in London to allow her motion to go through, but he responded that he was protecting her by not allowing it.
“I spoke to other senators to reach out to him to allow my motion to go through, but I didn’t tell them what happened. My husband had to take a trip to London, then the Senate President traveled to London. My husband met with the Senate President and pleaded with him, ‘Let my wife take this motion at Ajaokuta. It’s very important to her.’ He said he did not take it because he was protecting me.”
She attributed her experience with the Senate President to the scenario of a student being failed by a lecturer because she refused to sleep with him. Natasha stated that that is what she has been going through in simple terms.
