The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, has expressed concerns over the growing number of beggars on the streets of Abuja.

Speaking at an event in Abuja, Wike warned residents to desist from using the roads as a means to solicit money or other items. He noted that the increasing number of beggars is causing embarrassment to the people of Abuja.

Wike also hinted that some individuals on the streets pretend to be beggars when they are criminals.

He announced that starting Monday, beggars will not be allowed on the roads.

“Abuja is turning into a city of beggars. If you know you have a sister or a brother who is a beggar on the road, from next week we will carry them and take them out.

It is embarrassing that people come; the first thing they see are beggars on the road. Sometimes too, they may not be beggars but criminals pretending to be beggars. We will not allow that. I’ve given you now till Sunday. From Monday, we will pack them out.”
